ScreenThemes: What's New
Version 3.0 - February 2006
Welcome to ScreenThemes 3.0 (ST3)! This version offers a great deal of improvements
as well as some exciting new features.

New Features
- Create your own packs.
Just tell ST where the images are, and it will create a pack
for you. One pack per directory. Note that the packs use a
new format -- ST3 will be able to read your older packs,
but once it does, it converts them, and ST2 will no longer
be able to use them.
(more info)
- Screen saver supports multiple monitors.
This might be our most-requested feature. No transitions,
but hey: multiple monitors, multiple images!
(more info)
- List of packs integrated with main display.
The main window is split vertically with the left side listing
all your image packs. This is a great way to navigate through
your collection.
- No more pack registration.
You still download packs the same way, but there won't be any more
fiddling with registration keys. Hooray!
- Multiple login accounts on one PC.
Does each member of your family use ScreenThemes differently?
Now it will support that.
- Instant slideshows.
Pick the images you want to see, right-click to pop up a menu, and
select the slideshow feature.
- Support for laptops and wide-screen resolutions.
We've tested this on a
23-inch Apple monitor
hooked up to our PC, and it works great. There's even a
"crop mode" button in the toolbar so you can specify exactly
how 4:3 images get cropped to 16:9 ratio.
- Automatic announcements / upgrade detection.
With the proliferation of spam, we've found that many of
our newsletters are just not getting through, and we've
received hundreds of questions about that. Now all our
newsletters will be announced directly through the software
itself, and you can specify exactly what types of messages
you do and don't want to receive.
- Ability to delete an entire image pack.
Strangely, even with today's huge disk capacities, this is
a popular tech support question. So we decided to make it
super-easy. (NOTE: This feature does not work for users without
admin access.)
- Use a rating threshold for random old wallpaper images.
Now you can tell ST to only show old images if you've given
them a certain rating.
- Tray app is a tiny, separate program.
Uses much less memory now throughout the day -- almost none,
in fact!
- Screen saver offers smooth transition effects.
The old transitions are dead; long live the new transitions!
They are designed from the ground-up to work via DirectX 7 or
higher, and they're much smoother than ever before.
(They only work for the primary monitor; any other monitors
are blacked out.)
Features Removed
There were a few features from 2.X that we decided to eliminate with
this new version...
- Sound / Music.
We know this will probably be the biggest disappointment to our users,
but it was causing tons of tech support for us, trying to help people
who clearly had a bad or incorrect Windows installation -- nothing to do
with our software.
- Textures.
This wouldn't be hard to add later on, but from the email we've received
over the years, we got the impression this wasn't an important feature
for most people.
- Desktop / icon options.
Windows XP rendered these options obsolete; we designed them for the
previous generations of Windows, and they are simply no longer needed.
(For additional information, see our
previous FAQ page
on this topic.
- Search for image by name.
Not really needed now that we have the image packs better organized in a tree control.
- Puzzlepalooza compatibility.
We have discontinued Puzzlepalooza, and with out internal redesign of ST3,
we had to leave the old file formats behind. If you want to continue to use
Puzzlepalooza, we recommend you stay with Screenthemes v2.
